Midnight Mission, a private agency founded in 1868, undertook the "care and reformation of unfortunate (white) girls" who became pregnant.The agency also served as a shelter for "women who have been betrayed." Maternity cases were subsequently sent to various hospitals and later to the Sheltering Arms until the women could care for themselves.
